Runway Beauty: "Glowy" Skin and Beachy Waves at Isabel Marant Spring 2014

Isabel Marant’s woman is a study in the kind of uncomplicated French chic that has long been the envy of many an American, a quality that extends as much to the designer’s beauty codes as her approach to clothes. No matter who is doing the hair and makeup each season, the adjectives natural and easy tend to fly around backstage at her shows.

“[Isabel] had a specific girl in her head, the kind of girl who has come back from vacation and has highlights,” hairstylist Didier Malige explained of the slightly texturized strands he was creating backstage, which were organically parted and thickened with extensions where needed. “It’s almost beachy, without the salt.” He was skipping the usual ubiquitous bottles of ocean spritzes in favor of OSiS+ Hairbody volumizer and Shu Uemura’s Satin Design Polishing Milk for a soft, not “sticky” finish. “Everyone tries to get back to [looking like] this kind of happy and healthy girl,” he surmised.

It wasn’t too much of a stretch for Georgia May Jagger, who was essentially typecast for the show. “I wear it all the time—I’m wearing it now!” a beaming Jagger said of the purple, floral-printed Isabel Marant minidress that she broke out for the occasion. The model, who has frequently been spotted at work and play since completing her photography studies, was an easy fit for makeup artist Christelle Cocquet’s fresh-faced look as well.

A bit “glowier” than usual, thanks to a concentrated layering effort of MAC’s copper-tinged Lustre Drops and Benefit’s glimmering Sun Beam highlighter, Cocquet’s dewy complexions were treated to a circulation-boosting massage, followed by a sheered-out foundation application and a dab of simple balm on both lids and lips. “It’s a little more sexy,” she said while grooming models’ brows with a clear mascara—all with a few exceptions, that is: Sasha Luss, Manon Leloup, and Suvi Koponen required special attention when they arrived directly from Christian Dior, equipped with Pat McGrath’s heavily bleached, gold-encrusted arches. “The trick is [this],” said Cocquet, displaying the Benefit’s Gimme Brow wands, her insta-brow fix. The tinted, fiber gel, she continued, also happens to be an excellent tool for those looking for a quick thickening solution—making it just one more must-have from the runway for the Marant girl come spring.
