Daily Face: The No Mascara, No Eyeliner Daytime Smoky Eye

The other day I was pretty low-key, so naturally my makeup matched that as well. Even though I did a full face (minus the blush and of course the mascara and eyeliner) it still turned out quite nicely, which is why I decided to reveal how I created this particular look.

4408 In Houston

I am happy to say that I enjoyed a superb three days and two nights in one of my favorite cities - Houston. These shots were taken in a brand new apartment complex that barely spanned an acre but was made up of the most wonderful architecture - perfect for a black and white dress teamed with peals and nude kitten wedges. However, beneath all that clean polish, there is a little bit of grungy imperfection . Like the messy updo I fashioned on myself while still half asleep that morning, or the oh-so-embarrassing facial flaws hidden-but-not-quite by a very reliable concealer. Hey, after all, we are all humans here. I have only once seen someone that would be considered absolutely perfect, and that was a model edited, made up, and airbrushed in a magazine. Actually, I've seen hundreds of them. And truly? They are never truly, absolutely perfect. We just think they are. I am most inspired by the movies from the 80s. Like Dirty Dancing. I wouldn't call anyone in the film a supermodel, at least by today's standards, but you still want to see them, to touch them, to adore them. Them meaning, of course, the actors/actresses that dominated that silver screen. The secret to their success? Supreme self-confidence, flaws, and a trailer-full of makeup artists and makeup. (Notice that I included flaws in the selection, what I find a hundred more times alluring than perfection is flaws carried with confidence.) So, as a response to looking beautifully flawed, here is me made up, styled, yet still flawed. And boy am I proud of it.

Tokyo Fashion Week Fall 2014 Street Style

Minori

Never have I ever seen Japanese Fashion Week street style, but now that I've seen the fantastic, unreal visions of goth and anime and girlishness, I am obsessed. You see dramatic gold crosses, and drapey layers that we associate strongly with cool Japanese style, also, on a girly side, you can see saccharine-cute lace flourishes and floaty fabrics.  Somehow, these people are so fantastically unreal, so incredibly detailed, so impeccably put together - it seems only Tokyo can transform it's streets into works of art.

White Vest

Whenever I think of dressing for spring, somehow this particular white vest pops into my mind. A nice combination would be a patterned skater skirt, but I decided to give a tribute to these simply wondrous new jeans I got recently. They fit like a glove, are not so skinny that I have to jump into them, and go with just about everything I want. I like the idea of mixing multi-colored accessories with neutral tones, it gives an assemble a fun twist without breaching the classic minimalist barrier. I think the clutch is made of some kind of multi-hued tweed. It is something that has been in our bag bin for quite a while, and I can't remember my mom, my sister or me wearing it, so I brought it out for a debut.

Flashback: Purple Goblin

I was going through photos on my computer when I came across this one from last autumn. I was working on a school presentation with some friends when someone shot this photo of me wearing my purple scarf over my head like so. They said I looked like the green goblin from so-and-so movie (maybe some of you know what movie it was, I think it was Spider Man but I have absolutely no idea...). Of course, being the green goblin while wearing not a single green fiber on my body is sort of weird, so this photo is thus rechristened as The Purple Goblin.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014 Street Style Part Three

Dries Van Noten coat

In the last days of PFW, the most casual is deemed the most glamorous. In one photograph you see what appears at first glance to be a typical smiley-face takeout bag, but look again and you see that it is rendered in snakeskin and is, in fact, an Anya Hindmarch piece. Elisa Nalin wear a red sweater teamed with a necklace which greatly resembles a lighter, more wiry form of a classic gold Egyptian collar, and Barbara Martelo models her typical looking varsity jacket, which reveals a set of fangs on the back. On the last day of PFW, the city gives one stylish goodbye which leaves us hungering for more.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014 Street Style Part Two

Paris is keeping in it's gloriously modern classic vibe. Bold colors on some, delicate neutrals on others, navy blue is taking a resumed stand... However, there are plenty who choose to add a little extra - the little that will make them ever more so interesting. The 'Cola sequined top, the purse that sports a "Purse" label that appears to be written in white-out - all the quirks that make fashion so inviting to so many is visible on the streets of Fashion Week.

Beaded Earrings

If you've noticed in recent images of me, I recently got my ears pierced. Recently meaning in January. However, a week ago I was finally able to change earrings after my six week stud confinement. (Let me just say, I-do-not-like-studs. But I can live with them, mine are pretty nice for well, studs.)

Crop Top

Crop tops are a relatively old trend. They were around since fall, when the fashionable wore midriff-baring numbers, and are coming into this spring. Actually, many of those in NYFW decided to wear crop tops - despite the below freezing temperatures. Why? You might ask. Why would someone risk catching their death-of-cold just to be seen in a crop top? Is it the urge to feel risque? Is it to show off perfect abs? After trying a relatively modest piece for this photo session, I think I have the answer. From what super-modest form of crop top I experienced, it's simply for the feeling. The feeling of the breeze against your barely exposed skin, the feeling of freedom. Now that's cropped for you.
