I truly believe that every country, region or place has it's own unique lighting. Some countries I like better than others when it comes to lighting, my favorite so far being Russia. Compared with the lighting here in Texas, Russia is so soft and universally flattering that I long to take a thousand photographs whenever I go there. (And most of the time I do)
